What Is a Refinery Turnaround?

A turnaround — a TAR, and also called a shutdown or major outage — is a planned event in which a refinery or petrochemical unit is deliberately taken offline so that equipment can be opened up, cleaned, inspected, repaired and returned to service. Unlike routine running maintenance, a turnaround is the only window in which pressure vessels, columns, reactors and fired heaters can be entered internally, and it is scoped years in advance around statutory inspection intervals, catalyst change-outs and known reliability issues.

The defining characteristic of a turnaround is that it is intensely time-critical. Every day the unit is down represents lost production, and a TAR concentrates thousands of discrete work items into a fixed outage window measured in weeks. Because so much of that work is sequenced — a vessel must be isolated, drained, cleaned, inspected and cleared before repair can start and re-assembly can follow — the tasks that sit on the critical path determine the length of the entire event. The traditional way to inspect turnaround assets is access-heavy and slow. Internal inspection of a tall column or a large reactor conventionally requires full internal scaffolding or staging to be erected before an inspector can even reach the shell, trays and internals — and that scaffold has to come down again before the vessel can be boxed up.
