What Is a Reclamation Survey?
A reclamation survey is the aerial mapping and progress monitoring of land-reclamation and coastal-protection works — sand-fill placement, bund and revetment construction, platform-level forming and shoreline works — carried out from a drone rather than by ground crews walking the fill. Using photogrammetry, and LiDAR where dense vegetation or fine level detail demands it, a single flight captures the entire reclaimed area as a georeferenced 3D surface, even where the ground is soft, wet, still moving and largely inaccessible on foot.
Reclamation is unlike almost any other earthworks task. It moves enormous volumes of fill, and the surface changes daily as barges discharge and dozers spread material across the platform. The people running the project — the reclamation contractor, the main contractor and the project owner — need an accurate, up-to-date picture of the as-placed surface at all times: how much fill has gone in, whether the platform has reached its design level, and how the bund and shoreline are progressing. A drone reclamation survey gives them that picture on demand, over the whole site, without putting a survey team out onto an unstable working face.

Why Reclamation Works Need Frequent Aerial Survey
The defining challenge of a reclamation project is volume. Fill is bought, delivered by sea, placed and paid for in cubic metres, and the numbers are large enough that a small percentage error represents a significant sum and a real programme risk. To manage that, the project needs frequent, accurate as-placed surfaces — not an estimate, but a measured surface that can be compared period to period to establish exactly how much material has been placed and where.
Traditional ground survey struggles here. Taking levels by walking a soft, saturated, actively worked fill platform is slow, sparse and genuinely unsafe: the surface can be trafficked by plant, unconsolidated underfoot and bounded by open water. A ground crew can only occupy a limited number of points in a day, so the resulting surface is coarse and quickly out of date. A drone, by contrast, maps the whole area in one sortie at tens of points per square metre, keeps the surveyor off the working face entirely, and can be repeated as often as the programme requires.
Frequent aerial survey also protects the commercial position of everyone on the project. How We Survey a Reclamation Site
Reclamation demands both survey-grade accuracy and safe capture over water-adjacent, soft-fill ground. Our method is built around three principles.
Survey-grade georeferencing. Every flight uses RTK or PPK positioning combined with a distributed network of ground control points on the stable parts of the platform, tying the surface to the national horizontal and vertical datum. This is what turns a set of photographs into a metrically reliable surface on which cubic-metre volumes and centimetre-level checks can actually be trusted. Where the output supports a statutory or cadastral submission, the survey is prepared and reviewed with a Registered Surveyor.
Scheduled repeat flights. Because volume and level tracking depend on comparing like with like, we standardise flight lines, altitude, control and processing, then repeat them on a cadence that matches the pace of placement — weekly, fortnightly or at defined milestones. Consistent capture is what makes period-to-period volumes genuinely comparable rather than an apples-to-oranges estimate. Safe capture over soft and wet fill. The single biggest operational advantage is that the surveyor never sets foot on the active fill face or the water edge. The drone maps unconsolidated, trafficked and flooded ground that a ground crew could not safely occupy, and does so in a fraction of the time.
