What Is Drone Perimeter Surveillance?
Drone perimeter surveillance is a scheduled aerial sweep of a site boundary, flown as a repeatable route and recorded end to end. Rather than watching a handful of fixed viewpoints continuously, it covers the entire perimeter completely but periodically — the full fenceline, every gate, the ground on both sides of the boundary, the yards and open storage inside it, and the roof planes and rear elevations that are invisible from the ground.
The distinction matters, because most sites are not short of cameras. They are short of coverage. A fixed installation sees what it was aimed at when it was installed, and the gaps between camera positions are exactly where a boundary gets tested. A foot patrol walks the inside of the fence and cannot see the approach tracks, the dumped material or the cut section from the outside. A drone flies the whole line from above and records all of it at the same standard, every time.
Two sensors make the sweep useful. A zoom camera resolves the detail — a damaged fence panel, a lock left open, a vehicle where none should be, material stacked against a boundary wall. A thermal camera reads heat, which is what reveals a person in cover, a recently used vehicle, or a hot spot in a waste pile long before it becomes a fire. Together they answer both what is there and what has recently been there.
Why Sites in Singapore Use Aerial Boundary Patrols
The sites that benefit most are the ones with a long boundary and a low ratio of people to ground. A construction site with a perimeter hoarding running several hundred metres. An industrial yard with material stacked in the open. A logistics or storage compound where the value sits outdoors. A utility or reservoir landholding with fencing across terrain nobody visits daily. In every case the cost of covering the boundary properly by conventional means scales with its length, and the cost of covering it by air does not.
The failure modes are consistent too. Boundary hoarding gets damaged and stays damaged because nobody walks that stretch. Material accumulates against a fence until it becomes a climbing aid. Waste is dumped just outside the line where it is nobody's problem until it is. Access tracks appear on ground outside the fence, showing an approach route in use well before anything is taken. All of these are obvious from fifty metres up and easy to miss from the ground.
Aerial patrol is also the only practical way to inspect the parts of a site that are physically hostile to people. Roofs of site accommodation and stores. The seaward face of a boundary wall. Slopes and drainage reserves inside the fence. Sending someone to check those on foot means working at height or on unstable ground for a routine look; flying them means a two-minute pass in the same sortie that covers the rest of the line.
What a Patrol Sweep Records
Each sweep follows the same route so that one week's imagery can be compared against the last. Findings are logged against a boundary section reference with the supporting frames and timestamp.

How a Patrol Programme Is Set Up
- Boundary walk and route design. We map the perimeter, mark the sections that matter, identify existing camera coverage and blind spots, and design a flight route that closes the gaps rather than duplicating what is already watched.
- Permissions and airspace. Flights run under a CAAS Operator Permit with an Activity Permit for the site and dates. Sites near an aerodrome, over restricted areas or requiring night operation are assessed separately, as these carry stricter conditions and longer lead times.
- Privacy and data handling. The camera envelope is agreed in writing — what the route overflies, what it does not point at, how long imagery is retained, who can access it and how it is released if needed as evidence.
- Baseline sweep. The first flight establishes the reference condition of the whole boundary, so every later sweep is a comparison rather than a fresh description.
- Scheduled sweeps. The same route is reflown at the agreed frequency — weekly, daily, or around specific risk periods such as a shutdown, a long weekend or a phase change on a construction programme.
- Reporting and escalation. Each sweep produces a short findings note with frames and timestamps. Anything requiring immediate action is escalated to the client's nominated contact during the flight rather than at the end of the report cycle.
Where Aerial Patrol Fits Against CCTV and Officers
Aerial patrol is a sweep layer, not a replacement layer, and it is worth being precise about that because the three approaches fail in different ways. Fixed CCTV is continuous but narrow: it never blinks, but it only ever sees its own field of view, and a determined approach simply happens somewhere else. Security officers are responsive and can intervene, but a patrol is sequential, so at any given moment most of the boundary is unobserved, and officers cannot safely reach roofs, slopes or the ground outside the fence.
A drone sweep is periodic but complete. It gives, at intervals, a full picture of the entire boundary including the areas the other two layers structurally cannot cover. That makes it strongest where fixed coverage is thin, where the boundary is long, and where the useful question is not "what is happening right now" but "what has changed since the last look, and is anything being set up".
